Why Is My Furnace So Loud?

A loud furnace can be annoying to anyone living in or visiting your home. There are many different types of noises your furnace might be making and this could be due to a range of issues. One thing to note is that if your furnace is making loud or unusual noises that it is important to have your furnace fixed by an expert. Leaving your heating unit could result in damage or could leave you with no heat.

Why Your Furnace Might be Making Noises

A furnace that is making loud banging, whistling, rattling or screeching sounds likely has something going on inside it. Below are some of the more common noises and reasons your furnace may be keeping you awake at night.

  • Banging – If you hear a loud bang when the furnace first starts up your system may have an ignition problem. Watch your furnace when it starts up, if you see a large flame or there is excessive rattling you will need to call an HVAC professional straight away. If the banging is not due to an ignition problem you may notice the banging sound when you walk near the furnace. This could be due to a duct that is screwed in too tight or the metal panning around the duck may not be secured correctly.
  • Rattling – If there are loud rattling sounds or unusual vibrations coming from your furnace ducts it may be that your ducts are not placed correctly. This could be due to loose or missing screws in the ductwork.
  • Whistling – Whistling sounds can come from many sources, one source that can be easily recognized and fixed is a clogged filter. A bigger issue that may be causing whistling is your ductwork.  If your ductwork is too small for your home or there are gaps in the ducts whistling may occur. If your filter is clean and you can still hear whistling it is a good idea to contact an HVAC expert.
  • Screeching – Screeching or squealing often signals that there is a problem with your blower wheel or the motor. No matter what is going on if you hear screeching or squealing call an expert.
